Millions
of Americans seek alternative health care options and are beginning to
understand the essence of Chinese medicine.
What is the background of Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM)?
TCM dates back over 4,000 years and has been refined and advanced through
the clinical experiences of over 200 generations of practitioners. The
scientific research which is ocurring worldwide is providing further verification
of the effectiveness of TCM therapies. The World Health Organization acknowledges
the ability of TCM to facilitate healing. Though the US may be considered
a "late adopter" of TCM, it's acceptance is has been strong
on our west coast.
How
does TCM work?
TCM recognizes the vital energy called Qi (pronounced "chee",
also known as "prana" or "life force") that flows
through meridians (also called "channels") in the body similar
to water flowing in a river. There are twelve primary meridians, each
associated with an organ system. Disease occurs with imbalance (yin/yang),
resulting in excess or deficient amounts of Qi in the meridians. TCM works
to alleviate this imbalance and restore harmony using acupuncture, Tui
Na and herbs.
How
does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture points are located throughout the body and act as gateways
to influence, redirect, increase or decrease the vital substance of Qi,
thus correcting imbalances that cause disease.
Do
the needles hurt me?
No, most people barely feel the needles. The needles are thin, solid,
sterile, and made of stainless steel. The doctor lightly taps the needles
into the acupuncture points to mobilize energy (Qi) flow and invigorate
the proper function of muscles, nerves, vessels, glands and organs. Once
the needles are in, the patient has approximately 30minutes to relax,
meditate or take a nap, and let the energy flow. In Aculing Clinic, only
disposable needles are used.
How are Chinese herbs used?
Herbs are an important component of TCM treatment and prevention. Many
of these natural formulas are ancient, yet in our clinic we have many
of the more advanced formulas available. Currently, Chinese manufactured
herbs use only plant products, not animal. Herbs are not addictive, but
are powerful and should be taken as directed by your doctor.
How
long is a treatment?
Plan for 45 minuets. Some patients require both acupuncture and Tui Na,
which may take a bit longer.
What results can I expect?
Pain relief. Decrease in symptoms. Increased energy and vitality. Oftentimes
these effects are immmediate, but with some conditions results come more
subtly over time. We find a correlation between the length of time of
the illness and the time it takes to heal. We also see that children heal
more quickly than adults. Based on your diagnosis, your doctor will give
you an idea how many treatments and how much time it may take to make
you well.
Does insurance cover the treatment cost?
Nowadays, more insurance companies partially cover the cost of acupuncture.
If not, be certain to communicate to your employer's benefits department
that you need acupuncture and ask them to negotiate with the insurance
carrier to include it in the next plan year. If enough people do this,
your employer/insurance company can and will work this out.
What
type of disease could be treat by TCM?
Acupuncture with TuiNa treatment for injury of muscle, tendon, ligament,
prolepses of the lumbar and cervical intervertebral disc, cervical vertebra
syndrome, periarthritis of the shoulder, osteoarthritis, tenosynovitis,
etc.
Use of acupuncture and herbs for treatment of many conditions, ailments
and diseases, including but not limited to: gynecological, immune and
digestive system, miscellaneous internal damage diseases, rheumatoid arthritis,
osteoporosis, paraplegia, pain management.
